What is BA’s strategy with SYD?

Sat Aug 12, 2023 6:13 am

QF operates LHR-Australia (PER) non-stop on a 789 with a modern and comfortable 1x2x1 J seat. It also flys LHR-SIN-SYD on their premier A380 with the same modern J seat and a spacious F seat & cabin.

Yet BA operates LHR-SIN-SYD on a 789 with their oldest and most outdated international J cabins. I understand the 789 can’t do LHR-SYD n/s but the least they could do is fly it via SIN with a 772/77W with Club Suites to offer a cohesive experience to that of their OW partner QF.

Heck, even AA uses their most premium plane to SYD with the 77W.

Does BA view SYD as a necessary route, but have little to no interest in it so throw a 789 on the route with an outdated F & J cabin just to appease their JV partners?! Their F seat is the same as AA’s J seat on the 77W!

The 789 are getting refurbed soon to have the newer product.

The route does also alternate seasonally between the 77W and 789
The 772 is basically the same capacity as the 789 while being a lot less fuel efficient so I don’t expect any change.
SYD actually performs well for BA

I think the 77W returns soon and lasts until about March '24, so currently seasonal. As mentioned above, the 789 will get refurbished as well over time. You have to remember that it's a couple of days away for the plane before returning to LHR, so makes sense using more premium aircraft elsewhere during the winter months down under

Wow, it’s interesting to hear that SYD performs well for BA when they’re light years behind OW partners QF & QR in terms of J & F cabins.

I understand the 772 is less fuel efficient, but that doesn’t seem to stop BA from using them on long Asian routes like PKX (which I understand isn’t quite as long as LHR-SIN). But the money lost on fuel efficiency would be made up from fare premiums due to having newer CS cabins, no?

Speaking of new cabins - will the refurbed 789’s only have new J cabins or will they also install new F suites (not just put a door on the current seat)?

In general, having a better cabin does not equal a higher fare, most LH and UA J North Atlantic’s fares are roughly the same even though UA is Polaris and LH is 2-3-2.
similarily, on FRA-HND the Ana 787 (1-2-1) costs the same as the LH 748 (2-3-2)

Seemingly it’s only kept as a route to appease high rolling frequent flyers based in Singapore who would abandon BA on the Lon > Sin route if they couldn’t burn miles on Sin > Syd non stop . Yields Sin > Oz are trash , TK isn’t even going to bother pick up passengers in Sin. And of course it’s cheaper to stop in Sin than flying nonstop to Oz …

Years ago I remember being told by a sales rep that LHR-SYD just does ok for BA. They could make more money with the same aircraft and crew flying shorter routes. I am glad that seems to of changed.

With regards to what product you put on what route I guess in part that comes down to the type of passengers you are selling to. "If" your average BA LHR-SYD pax is someone who travels just a few times a year then would it not make sense to use an older product (until all the fleet is upgraded) and keep aircraft with the newer product for routes which attract more regular passengers?
