NASA's NB-52B, also known as “Balls 8”, participated in some of the most significant projects in aerospace history, like the launch missions of the X-15 program. After almost 50 years of flying service, the aircraft held the distinction of being NASA's oldest aircraft, as well as being the oldest B-52 on flying status. She is now preserved at the north gate of Edwards AFB.

The Northrop M2-F3 was a heavyweight lifting body rebuilt from the Northrop M2-F2 after it crashed at the Dryden Flight Research Center in 1967. It was modified with an additional third vertical fin - centered between the tip fins - to improve control characteristics. The "M" refers to "manned" and "F" refers to "flight" version.

The NASA 747SP "SOFIA" was one of the highlights of the airshow at Edwards AFB. Seen here is the 747SP taxies for static display after performing two low-passes. She stopped with engines running at this position for probably about 20-30 minutes in front of the crowd.

On display in the Research & Development Gallery at NMUSAF. This was the world’s first VSTOL tilt-rotor aircraft, powered by a single P&W R-985 Wasp. It was the result of a joint initiative in 1951 between the US Army and USAF. Two were built, and the first hover tests began in 1955. Take off to horizontal flight and back was achieved on 18 Dec 58. It never went into production, but paved the way later for the CV-22 Osprey. The first XV-3 was written off, and this is the only surviving example.

Incredible aircraft combining with those high tech machinesin NASA SOFIA equipping with a 2 meter Infrared Telescope ! One of the most special B747SPs in the world, but it is very sad to know that yesterday (December 16th, 2022) probably was its last flight to its final destination in Pima Air and Space Museum.

NASA's SOFIA 747SP is on final for the very last time. NASA donated it to the Pima Air & Space Museum here where it will be on permanent display. Originally delivered to Pan Am on May 6, 1977. After this landing there will be only two remaining 747SP still flying of the 43 built.
