It's sad to see the aftermath of this incident, reminds me of pictures of the Southwest incident in Pasadena. Glad everybody on-board survived, could have been a lot worse by the look of things.

In Southwests 35 year history they had never had an accident resulting in death. It sad that the boy was killed along with a beautiful plane being most-likely totalled beyond reapair. : (

The reason why the plane went through the fense was the reverse thrusters were not working eventhough the plane just had a routine maintenence check the wednesday before the incident.

Not knowing the true circumstances and the tragic consequences of this accident, it would almost appear that the pilot got lost and just wanted to have a closer look at the sign directing him back to the airport.

So very sad for the child and his family. And how disappointing to see so many juvenile comments, especially from this on-line community in particular. Fortunate the consequences were not worse (this time around). (And one of the writers above is absolutely spot on - this event was a big red flag renewing the broad issue about the failure of many airports to increase runway lengths (and install other safety measures now available) in line with the size and heavy traffic of the aircraft now using them.)

Chicago Midway runway 31C is 6,522 feet long but has a 700 foot displaced threshold. Do the math: 6,500 minus 700 displaced minus 1,000 feet to touchdown target equals only 4,800 feet available to stop. If runway is less than dry and you don't have reverse thrust you are in a heap of trouble.

Impressive and a very sad moment. My congratulations to the photographer for having kept the frames of this tragedy for a few days, instead of going for the "instant fame". Ok, I have had to land A320's for United for about a year now and I am telling you, even in the best weather and conditions, if you land short even by 800 feet, you will not have enough time to stop on that runway. Even with thrust reverser on maximum throttle, you with end up on 55th just like that Southwest 737.

I have flown southwest airlines several times and am conviced they hire a lot of retired fighter pilots. The big bank angles are fun for me but probably not for most... Lots of spoiler action on aproach, great fun but watch out for slippery short runways. Burbank not wet or that short. R.I.P.

I was on the flt- thought we might be coming in too fast.. When we touched down we just bounced down the runway, no solid contact with the ground at all. Thrust reversers didn't deploy for several seconds, when they did it splattered snow across my window and I couldn't see. After stopping we didn't evacuate for several minutes, everyone exited out the back right door on a fire department staircase. Aircraft will be scrapped for parts once NTSB releases it to SWA.

Midway and it's runways were constructed when props were the big airliners. They were long enough then. Unfortunately, there is no room form expansion. Rest in peace....poor kid. My heart goes out to the family.

My deepest condolences to the family!! What surprises me in particular is the fact that they did not go around when realizing that there is no solid contact with the runway for some time, being aware of the weather and runway conditions. Why force the landing when it's a critical approach?! I believe the slightest concern is good enough to go around, try again, and if necessary divert. It's too tragic what happened to such a young life.
