The most spectacular I have experienced in Europe so far! Very late 90 degree right turn ending right at the threshold of the runway. Dangerous downwinds from the hills make it even more difficult.

Interesting to see pilots eye view - I've been to Madeira and remember just how "last minute" the levelling off was - I thought the wing tip would be the first thing down! Would just like to have seen the runway in the distance though.

This one is amazing check out the unusual bank for an airliner, more than 30 degrees. This approach is one of the most difficult in the world due to the severe turbulence and windshear!

That was an amazing shot, i like how the photographer shows the angle and how there is so much going on and you can clearly see that the pilot is looking at the approach charts while he is pushing the throttles forward to try and maintane 135Knots and the first officer looks like he is trying to help (in a way).

Incredible awe inspriring shot. They're at quite an acute angle and it shows with the safety belts 'digging in'. You can tell these guys are true pros as their necks are bone dry! Mine would be a small river at this point!

Wow, that's a Jaw Dropper! I like the VSI: for a 30 degree bank ~100 ft/sec takes some serious skill in a 737, I'm sure. BTW, the actual IAS is 142 kts, not the 135 on the airspeed hold setting.

Amazing shot ... two captains .. tough approach ... a slight positive on the VSI .. and ofcourse the bank angle seems to be about 35 degrees ... actual IAS of 142 is perfectly acceptable ... as he is still turning ! ... cheerios !

I actually live in this beautiful island (Madeira Island)-make this trip about twice a year and it never ceases to amaze me this turn into Funchal Airport-best about it all is that this diagonal approach usually takes a good 5-10 minutes-lovely picture !!!

I've always wondered how much visibility the pilots have when making these turns. Awesome and they look so relaxed. I personally hate it when the pilots make last minutes banks before landing - especially at night. As a passenger I can't see anything.

I every year go the Island of Madeira, therefore I have family and I have a friend who is pilot in TAP. I always ask for to see the cabin in the landing and I think that the photo, in this angle, is a very good photo and shows the difficulty that is to landing in Island of Madeira. Great job!!!

I can't believe this photo was added over 14 years ago! I still remember the day, the moment, and the place (like it was yesterday) I viewed it for the time - it was quite literally, nearly half a lifetime ago for me. What a testament to a.net: that it's still going strong after all these years, and what a testament to the enduring properties of high quality photography. Wow...I am simply stunned today.

Flew into (and out of) Funchal in the summer of 1980 (before the runway extension). Airline (TAP) actually went on strike while I was on the island. The airline graciously agreed to fly us back to Lisbon (where we had to switch to TWA to get home).
