The sound barrier effect is always amazing. And not easy to take to because of the high speed. Well taken.

What sort of pressure impact on the airframe? does the vapour form at the lower pressure area's? Wow tis is one stunning picture...

Showing how the water vapor is visible in the vacuum portion of the sonic boom is just plain amazing. I fly, and one thing that has always bothered me is that I cannot see the majority of the action of the air. Clouds tell the tale. This bird even sports a Mach-one misty Mohawk!

Very nice picture. Only one cloud @ the sky would be picked up by an aircraft. Pretty nice I think.

Especially great shot because it caught the moment of transition to Mach 1 -- breaking the sound barrier.

Superb detail - four distinct low-pressure areas producing the "halo effect". Canopy, inlet cowls plus the main zone. One thing to bear in mind is that the effect needn't be when the aircraft is "breaking the sound barrier" as it can be produced near the speed of sound, should conditions allow. Stunning shot, though, congratulations...!

It is so marvellous because of the atmospheric phenomena around the wings and tail of the aircraft!!! Never saw something like it before.

The huge halo is condensation of water vapour due to lower pressure in that areas
Great PIC!!!A very rear one!!!

Always love seeing another expansion wave, and on a B-1B it's even better!
Anonymous

I find the detail fascinating that shows the relatively small amount of condensation near the cockpit compared to the much larger :halo" of condensation farther back. I don't really understand the physics, but this photo's very revealing and potentially instructive.

Technical quality of photo combined with unusual (less so these days, but still) subject matter. All in all an esthetically pleasing photo.

Excellent shot! Must be doing about Mach .98 or so. When the aircraft is at Mach 1, the barrier is at the very aft tip of the plane, above Mach 1 it "trails" behind it. Great shot though!

I had the pleasure of being assigned to work on B-1B's while I was in the Air Force. There's nothing like watching these birds take off in full afterburner and pull straight up and away. As you look at this photo imagine it flying just above tree level at mach speed. This was it's intended ingress mode.

As an Air Force veteran I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the aircraft of the USAF. Being a Fuels Specialist I filled all the aircraft assigned. I was lucky enough to see these condensation effects on the flight line up close and personal . It is an awesome visual!
