I just cant imagine what the people were thinking that were flying that day when they heard about it. Truly a sad day.

We should never forget what Canada did for the United States on 9/11. I often think back to those few nights when the only thing in the skies were the stars.

One of those days and views nobody will ever forget

A day that we would like to forget but we cannot. God bless the innocent people that lost their lives that day including the 343 firefighters from New York. I was on flight 51 from Gatwick that was diverted to Toronto. Not too many planes ended up there but I would like to see a picture if available. The Canadians were very kind to us and we appreciate that.

Over 40 aircrafts are there, What a tragic event. but imagen what other airports would of look like the same day, planes piled up everywhere. As a pilot flying that day I was terified as I was diverted. 5* We will never forget the people who lost their lives.

That is truly amazing, sadly the events that made this happen were all so tragic. And to the person who asked about how it was taken, most of Canada CF-18s were flying cover over Canada's Major cities. And seeing how Halifax is one of Canada's major ports I would imagine they would of been up.

This photo is very powerful. Somehow this image describes the fear I felt that week.

I feel it was incredible that an airport that normally handles a fraction of the aircraft shown was able to tidily park this amount and still continue to operate,amazing what amall airfields can achieve when the chips are down,well done to all concerned.

As greatfulness German airline Lufthansa entitled Airbus A 340 D-AIFC "Gander/Halifax".
It's the ONLY aircraft by Lufthansa that is NOT entitled by a german city or county !

I was on a one one of those planes at that time
A USAir 767 from Amsterdam to Philly
Spend three days living in a hockey rink as a guest of the fine people of Halifax.

I recall this image so vividly...I never thought I would see a photo of my memory. My heart was in my stomach as our British Airways jet landed and I saw the parked jets, two by two, from my window. We were parked next to an Alitalia jet for the next 9 hours or so; I lost track of time over the next several hours but it was dark when we finally deplaned. After all that waiting, the actual deplaning happened in a rush; we actually were nearly jogging off the plane! Thank you for posting this photo and THANK YOU to the amazing people of Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where we stayed on the gym floor of a technical college!

Looks like all of these planes have been lined up and stood in attention to salute the people who sacrificed in that tragic event. Just like a military squad which salutes to their lost comrades. (Ali Aminzadeh)

Incredible view. But why did they park all airplanes on the runway and left the gate positions empty?

They are most likely parked on the runway versus near the terminal buildings because of possible bombs on board...wouldn't want them to explode near the building where people are...

They have parked all the planes on rwy 14/32 and left rwy 05/23 clear for arrivals and departures, beacause YHZ remained an operational airport for Canadian destinations. They also left the apron and the gates clear beacuse of this reason. Great photo!

I counted 39 aircraft. I can see the aircraft is on the runway. Due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. My condolences to the existence family.

I remember that day vividly, as many do. I had just moved back home to Des Moines, WA -- under the flight path of SeaTac airport. Never in my life had the skies been so deathly quiet, nor, hopefully, will they be again.
