Caption

About 10 seconds after liftoff from runway 19R something happens with the left engine. Alot of smoke and fragments of metal and other material falls down on the runway. At first the pilots don't get any indications in the cockpit and plan to go on to Kuala Lumpur. Then we decide to call Arlanda duty officer to make sure that they have noticed the pieces from the engine on the runway. Shortly after that the pilots requests fueldump and return to ARN safely. [Nikon D70, Nikkor 80-200 f2.8]

The technical quality of the photo is very good... excellant resolution and exposure against the bright background.. The detail of the problem with #1 engine plainly visible and the gear in transit gives the photo a quality of immediacy. All in all... very good.

Thank you very much for your comments. Yes it really was one in a million shot. I sold the picture to the swedish newspaper Expressen and they gave the picture one spread in colour! I'm very proud AND very happy that that the pilots managed to land again without incident.

Excellent Capture!!! Better to dump the fuel and get back on the ground, pay for a new engine from GE (or RR) to be brought in and have a tech crew look over the starboard wing. And pay hotel bills for the PAX until a replacement can be brought in or have them rebooked elsewhere.

We in MH had a tough time reallocating the affected paxs, but they've all been successfully sent on their way; mostly via LHR.
First time I'm seeing a pic of the stricken a/c. Plane was last B772 to complete cabin retrofit and re-entered 29Oct.
Latest info - 9M-MRI is OK now. Was ferried back to KUL and landed 2229/09NOV lcl time.

Fantastic shot! Broken engines are very difficult to capture, especially Rolls Royce ones. I've seen P&W & GE engines go up in smoke on 777s a few times on various sites, but due to the reliablilty of RR engines, its hard to capture them. Thank God one finally went! Great photo. 5 stars!

This picture clearly states that we, plane spotters, are NOT criminals or suspects whatsoever but pure aviation fans. Frederik's attitude clearly showed that - spotters should be respected and taken as friends nearby airports and NOT foes. Wow what a great photo! Crystal clear, perfect lighting, great angle and amazing to see the debris falling! I hope the newspaper paid you appropriately for that shot - its absolutley brilliant.

I'm glad that the plain landed safely - though i suspect it looks worse than it was and the plane was never in danger.

Thats what i call "looking after each other with care". pilots cannot see external problems and really is up to ground staff to be informative and alert too.

Quite interesting that there's no right rudder deflection, as certainly the #1 engine had lost power at this point. Very nice photo!

The possible reason why it's no rudder deflection is that the image is taken about one second after the "boom", the pilots have not reacted yet.

No birdstrike and it was not the engine itself. If I remember correctly it was coating or insulation from the engine cowling.

That must have been alot of fuel to dump. I agree with the sentiments of commenters below, wonderful job in contacting the duty manager and alerting them of the debris and being able to tell the crew the left some of number 1 on the runway.

Incredibly sharp, well focussed and well framed, a brilliant shot even if the aircraft was operating normally. The timing (partly luck) showing the engine problem makes this a once in a lifetime shot.

Great photo. I really doubt the pilots didn't see or notice any issue with their engine. The slightest variation would show, fan, temperature, vibration, etc. I think it took them a bit to run the checklists. Remember, "aviate, navigate, communicate". Good on you for showing initiative, but I'm sure they knew before you saw it...
